Coast Guard,Coast Guard Reserve, and military search and rescue job questions?

So I went and talked to the Coast Guard Recruiter in my area and he stated that he only had a position in the Reserve currently for me. I am interested in being a Coastie for the water rescue. He stated that it is pretty standard for most Coast Guards to stay in once they get in and that keeps a low opportunity for others to join as enlisted or officer(I would be going in as enlisted).

I've also heard that a lot of times there is a two year waiting list to become enlisted in the Coast Guard. Joining the other branches doesn't really interest me that much, not that there is anything wrong with them,I have nothing, but the utmost regard and respect for them. It is just that with my personality I don't feel like I could handle taking another person's life whether it be for self-defense or protecting this nation and I believe I would squander my physical abilities by not trying for something that requires those said skills. As a sidenote to tie into this, I am currently a Ocean Rescue Lifeguard and I am looking for something that goes along those lines.

Is there anyone with info on being a Coast Guard Reservist, getting into the Coast Guard,or any other jobs in the other branches of the military that involves search and rescue. Any info would be welcome info. Thanks for your time.
