Closed Caption on HD receivers?

Hi,

How exactly does closed caption work with the HD receiver?
Because the way I turn on closed caption is by hitting the CC button on my TV remote and it simply goes on or off. Will this method work with the HD receiver?

With my TV I have to use the Receiver's CC. On my 9242 I hit - menu - 8 - 8- 1 - left arrow - select.

That hasn't been my experience. As far as I've been able to determine, if I turn on CC on my receiver, the captions show up on the TV no matter what I do with the TV controls. I'm wondering if the TV can't filter out the CC information via HDMI or something like that.

I also find that turning CC on and off on the Bell receivers is so cumbersome (it's about 4 levels of menus), I rarely use it. But that's a rant for a different thread.

So you pretty much HAVE to use the HD receiver's remote for closed caption?

TVs cannot CC HD signals like 720P or 1080i coming from a device, therefor the sending device must do the CC for HD. Since the BTV STBs only send one format, the BTV STB must do the CC for SD and HD if you wish to watch HD in 720P or 1080i.

I believe it is dependent on what is doing the channel tuning.

In the case of a satellite receiver the job of tuning in the channels is performed by the satellite receiver therefore Closed Captioning (CC) is also handle by the satellite receiver and turned on using the controls on the satellite receiver.

In the case of a set top box provided by a cable company, since the set top box is tuning in the channels, the set top box would provide CC and therefore it would be turned on using the controls on the set top box. There could be an exception to this if the set top box's signal is tuned in using a TV channel like channel 3 or 4. In this case it may be possible to use the TV's CC controls to turn on CC.

In the case of over-the-air signals where you are using an antenna and the TV's own tuner is tuning in the channels, the TV would provide the CC. The TV tuner would also provide CC in the event that you are tuning in a cable company's signal using the TV's tuner as opposed to using a cable companies set top box.

Clarification: Many TVs can CC incoming 480i signals from other devices, so the device doesn't need to do the CC if the signal is SD, but it does if it's HD. Of course the VBI information that contains the CC must be "passed" by the device, however, most devices do that.

Some TVs cannot CC signals via HDMI even if they're 480i and some (relatively rare) TVs can't even CC component video input 480i signals.

Of course if the TV's internal tuner is tuning the NTSC/ATSC channel, it'll CC any programme that contains CC, but since this is a BTV thread, that topic didn't come up.
