Clearing Apple computer?

I was recently given a MacBook Pro by my dad's boss (originally purchased in Dec '07). Understandably, he would like the computer cleared before we claim it as our own. My question is this: The computer has all the latest software (iWork, iLife). When we clear the computer, will these programs disapear as well? I was hoping they would stay so we didn't have to purchase them, but would be ok if they did. Was just curious.

Also, what are the benefits of the Snow Leopard?
