Cleaning the freezer

It's long over due. Our chest freezer needed to be defrosted and cleaned
out. Someone (nor me) spilled a bunch of cherries in it a while ago and
there is a hefty buildup of ice and frost on the sides. Then there were
those partial bags of frozen veggies that have been there for a year or
more, a tub of brown mystery sauce. I took the good stuff and put in the
car for the night. It may be the last really cold night of winter so it
seemed like a good time to do it. First thing in the morning I should be
able to clean it out, start it up and bring things back in from the car
before it warms up.

Does your freezer have a drain tube thing at the bottom and had you better
put a pan beneath it to catch the puddles? Can you set a fan to blow into
the freezer to hasten the defrosting? Are you Certain that you really want
to do this? It's time for me to defrost our freezer too but putting things
in the car is not an option. Our daytime temps are already running at 80?
and step one here would be to chill down a couple of ice chests. Polly

It has a drain but I can't imagine how I would get something under it.
I found it just as easy to use a (clean) floor mop to sop up the excess
water, then used a wash cloth to wipe it down and get the rest of the water.

It is still winter here. The forecast was for -12 overnight (10 F) and
below freezing for the day. I figured the stuff would be safe in the car
overnight but I wanted to get it out of the car before the sun had been
up long enough to do the greenhouse thing through the windows.
I got up early and had the freezer cleaned out and everything back into
it before 8 am.
