I need to do an improv solo for the old jazz standard Just A Closer Walk. I know it starts off slow and in Bb (C for me) but then it modulates to D?? (E for me) and goes in to a "Dixie Style" and is more upbeat. (Correct me if I'm wrong) My solo falls into the upbeat section
I had a talk with my clarinet teacher and was told to stay in the E Major scale for the majority, and then add a few G and D naturals in where appropriate
Here is the chord sequence:
E | C7 | B7 | Gdim | B7 | | A E | | E9 | E9 | A |Am7
This is a 12 bar solo, with drums, string bass and me, and I was wondering what might be good to do here, and also if anyone has done this before. Any notes, patterns, rhythms etc. that would sound good, and any tips as I haven't really done this kind of big solo before.
Any help greatly appreciated!
