Clarification on Unlocking iphone 3g 3.1.3 5.12.01

Hello everyone
I need some help as reading all these tutorials left me a bit confused.
I can use the o2 sim card on my phone and also can get into the menu but I do not have cydia installed anywhere in the menu.
Now I want to unlock the phone in order to use other sim cards and from the turorials I read it says that I need to install cydia.
How do I install Cydia and which program do i Use and can I unlock it without installing Cydia?

1. you can jailbrake with spirit (it will install cydia too) and install ultrasn0w 0.9.3 to unlock from cydia
 
ok thank you vert much, in two line you have explained very well how to unlock my iphone.
I have followed the instructions and after going in cydia>source and installing ultrasnow and rebooting , I have tried a new sim card but it says no service
when i use o2 simcar it gives signal and shows o2 simcar but when I use orange one it says no service.

Where I made a mistake?
 
ok I guess the problem was with the simcard I have tried vodafone and 3 sim cards and they worked

I just wanted to have a couple of more information.
Now that my iphone is unlocked, if i upgrade the firmware to the latest version os4 ,will it be still unlocked?

2) if the phone is locked and on the latest firmware os4 ,is it still possible to unlock it?

the unlock for the latest version,is it going to be reliesed soon or there is still lots of work to do on it?
 
what does that exactly means, sorry I am new to this , jailbreaking means being able to use third party application right?
Cydia is a third party application and if I can't use it then how Can install Cydia in the Iphone and Unlock it?

so basically if I upgrade my iphone to the latest version then how will I unlock it ?
