Civilization III gameplay?

Just got the game and trying to learn how to play, but the game manual isn't very helpful or clear.

I can select the initial options for gameplay and start a new game. I have managed to establish a city.

But the 8 or so people I have at the start only have the useful option to 'explore' and I dont know how to get people to build my city!?

So each turn is just using 'explore' which isn't helpful.

If someone could give me detailed instructions on how to get the start of the game going that would be great.

you start with a settler and another unit, use the settler to establish a city. You will the get to decide what to research and also what the city should build. Start with building a worker, then a settler, then a defencive unit, do this repeatedly until you have a number of cities all doing the same, then diversify into city constructions. The bar in the city will show how long it takes to complete each city build. Using the worker to build roads andimprovementss around the city will allow the cityto expandd faster and the build to get quicker. Try the in game tutorial and play at lowest leveluntill you get the hang of it.
