Civilization and society are dependant upon us for survival - if we went extinct, they'd stop altogether. They also exact a toll on us, that being many of the freedoms necessary to relinquish in order to make society a tolerably peaceful place.
If that doesn't describe a parasitic relationship, I don't know what does. Granted we've managed to form a useful symbiotic relationship with it, but many hosts do when subjected to constant parasitism.
