Civilian shooting scenario - LAWYERS ONLY PLEASE!!!?

Say I'm in a convenient store and a robbery goes down. If I'm carrying my gun, should I shoot, or wait until he turns the gun on me, assuming he has a gun pointed at the cashier.

What if I do shoot? How can I avoid a civil suit from the family of the robber? From your point of view, what's the right thing to do in this scenario?

Do I take action and try to save the cashier's life, or do I hold fire and just try to be a good witness.

This is a tough call, and I'm sure it's tough to say given a broad scenario like this, but it's hard to imagine just standing by and letting an innocent person get murdered when you may be able to save them.

Is there any kind of catch-all green light to shoot we should look for?
