Civics and Economics Essay?

I have to write 2 short paragraphs for an online civics class.
The first one must answer the question "how do laws impact our lives"
The second must answer the question "how do societies resolve conflict"

I'm not asking you to write an essay, I just need some ideas for what to write about, etc. Especially on the second one. Thanks, any help appreciated.
 
How do societies resolve conflict?
- With judiciary systems, I guess. Lawyers, judges, courts - all those things are used to resolve conflict. Then there are law enforcement officials, they resolve conflict, too.
 
Just off the top of my head... for the first one you could write about gay marriage and how it affects america's homosexual community. The second part is an extremely broad question, because almost all societies have conflict.. you could write about the civil war in america i guess.
