City planted palms in San Francisco, residents protested "that's too L.A"?

I remember reading somewhere that the City's groundskeepers had planted a row of palms in some famous spot in San Francisco, and the residents protested that they shouldn't have palms, they're too L.A.? Which I, as an Angelino, have to agree with.

Anyhow, does anyone remember the details? I think it might have been near the Embarcadero.
