City Of God Is The Best Film Of The Year

It really is.

Good characters, restrained camera tricks, decent story, some good jokes, it's a really classy and intelligent movie all round.

Here's hoping it's the foreign one that the Academy take to this year.

Funny how when someone mentions a foreign-language film on here no-one replies. The domination of Hollwood is really depressing when so many non-American films are far better than the stuff which fills the multiplexes. :(

The original post didn't require a response. It was a statement. I agree that the film is excellent. You could argue that the lack of replies means nobody disagrees, therefore everyone loves quality foreign films.

I posted one about a foreign film and it got loaRAB of replies... your statement is incorrect. You just wanted to mouth off about how sophisticated you are watching loaRABa foreign films. Am I right? Your not wrong! :p - Some holywood films, I regret to say, are pretty darn good, although the mojority are just enjoyable, if not trashy eye candy.
The good thing about hollywood is the variety, you have to wait a while for a decent foreign film that you like the look of to come along in my experience, whereas you can just go along to video shop, look in a genre and get a decent film that you are in the mood for... Easy

I could be thinking about the wrong film, but wasn't City Of God originally released before the last Oscars. Therefore it would be ineligible this year? IMDb certainly says it was released in 2002.

I saw this in the video shop the other day. Its on my 'too see' list.
Shame it wasn't on general release at the cinemas.

Forgotten all about this thread!
Glad it's finally started something.

'City Of God', according to the Imdb, was premiered in the US in Summer 2002, and had three festival runs that year. However, it wasn't comercially released in the US until January 17th, 2003, which should qualify it for the upcoming Oscars.

It probably won't win a thing as there's Seabiscuit, ROTK etc in the way, but it's already #83 on the Imdb's all-time greats list, ahead of the likes of The Graduate and Ben-Hur.

I think its Brazilian release was 2002. The oscars depend on the US domestic release I think... Which was 17/01/03... I think that is OK for the 2004 Oscars... I'm not sure as the Oscars date has changed.

I prefer Bollywood films myself!

lol.......i can understand them without subtiles for some strange reason lol.......I love watching them when i feel down......and i love the music....and i am not even indian:D

I'm not usually a fan of arty-farty type movies.. believing there is usually a good reason why have never been successful elsewhere. However, Citado de Deus was a great film, well made and had a gripping story. It's all based on a true story and the action is great.

To call a film arty-farty is unfair...

Hulk made millions, but that was incredibly arty farty... whereas films like Requiem which are excellent, but don't have the revenue to advertise don't make the money for that reason... They survive on word of mouth and video sales.
