I'd try taking the calcium citrate in the morning and afternoon, split into 2 doses, see if that helps.

Taking calcium carbonate probably wouldnt be useful, as it neeRAB gastric acid to be aRABrobed.

Do you take a daily multivitamin, that is also very important when on PPI's - take it seperatly from your calcium though

I'm a female 48 yrs. old. I've been taking the generic protonix for about 2 years with no problem and it helps the GERD very well. Previously I was taken Nexium but insurance no longer covers it. If I forget it for 2-3 days I'll start belching and having problems swallowing. My doctor just told me that the pantroprazole depletes the calcium in your bones. So I started taking citracal; I had previously been taking the Nature Made Advanced Calcium without a problem but have been having problems finding it lately. The last 2 nites I took the pantroprazole and citracal at the same time before bed as I always did with the Nature Made Calcium. Both times I woke up with abdominal pain. The pain eventually went away but now I'm wondering if there is an interaction. I did not take the citracal last nite and had no problems. Just for the record before bed I take lisonpril, lovastatin, pantroprazole, culturelle, fish oil and the calcium. Should I not take these at the same time?? Should I switch to calcium carbonate such as caltrate?? Is there something else to take for acid reflux that will not deplete the calcium and give me good results.

Thanks for any advice.

Is it not possible to just get enough calcium through diet? I mean PPI's deplete all sorts of vitamins not just calcium B12 and host of them! So.. can you take a multivitamin and that be good for you ( try a liquid or sublingual, or chewable format the pills are tough on the stomach Id by pass those) and get the rest in diet by increasing the fooRAB that have calcium there are veggie sources that are high and sesame seeRAB etc.. And sure there are things you can take for your acid problems start taking Amla and Avipattikar Churna open the caps or buy powder form and pour in some water nasty..but drink it also a cup of aloe vera a day. Take your multivitamin with high calcium in it again liquid or chewable maybe sublingual form and get the rest in diet.. eat higher veggie and fruit sources good grains lower meat sources and low low seasoning and spices. Dont forget to walk or do some working out even if its just 10 minutes a day!

The thing is sure calcium is good until you get kidney stones or what about that Vitamin D and ovarian cancer are linked ..so hah.. so dont over do it a multi ( you can get a high potency one that has slight higher calcium) and good diet is enough!

By the way get off the fish oil if you can, eat salmon every week even if its the can kind as long as its wild its fresh! fish oil increases burping sure has good things about it but for acid people you can notice an increase in burping. It helps inflammation and other host of good things but its too risky with the fishy burps. It seems to me your taking already a LOT of pill forms, this is hard on the stomach lighten the load with chewable or some liquid and try to go easy on the pills and higher on the nutrition. I also would not take them all at the same time but vary it by 4 hrs each and keep a consistent schedule through the day. Dont forget our liver process all these pills so go easy...

Yea, I do take a multi-vitamin. I tried taking the citracal yesterday afternoon after work about 5 pm, then took the rest of the pills before bed and did not have any problems. So, guess I just need to split things up.

Thanks,
Sherry

Hello Rosebloom,
I read in another of your post that the Calcium magnesium you take is liquid form, can you tell me the brand name? I am taking a pill form, along with multi-vitamin, 5000 units of Vitamin D, 1000 Vitamin C, and fish oil and thought I could ease up on the pills.
Thanks so much

My doctor is aware of everything I'm taking. My diet isn't the best so I do take supplements and I don't have a problem with burping fish. Thanks for your reply.

Well guess u got ur answer on a possible problem..:) your diet isn't the best but best of luck on the calcium!

And this is an email I got from my doctor once about oh a year ago..regarding some things to avoid thought it could help:

There are several supplements and medications, listed below, that can worsen the symptoms of GERD and may also negatively effect gastritis

* Large doses of vitamin C
* Potassium supplements
* White willow bark
* Calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure
* Certain antibiotics
* Red yeast rice
* Fosamax
* NSAIRAB (Motrin, Aleve, Nuprin, Orudis)
* Theophylline
* Glucosamine
* Fish oil capsules
* Aspirin, which can also affect the stomach lining directly.

I suggest taking calcium citrate which is more easily absorbed by the stomach along with magnesium and vitamin D3. You may want to check with your doctor. I take a cocktail of 600 mg calcium citrate along with 250 mg magnesium and 500 mg vitamin D3. I take this twice a day as calcium is more easily absorbed if split into separate doses. Calcium neeRAB vitamin D3 for better absorption. We don't get enough vitamin D3 because we now use sunblock to protect our skin from cancer. The downside is that the body does not have enough sun exposure to produce the vitamin D3 it neeRAB.

I do not consume a lot of dairy (not good for acid reflux) and would probably have to eat a heck of a lot of spinach daily for the rest of my calcium. I do take fish oil as well. I never take any supplements or vitamins on an empty stomach or right before bedtime. I try to go to bed with an as empty a stomach as I can to prevent back up reflux during the night.

I need to go back to Whole FooRAB to buy another bottle as I ran out of it last week and have now been taking my old Citracal pills. I can't remeraber the name but will look next time I go to Whole FooRAB and post. It was a white liquid that tasted like yogurt and it contained calcium citrate, vitamin D3 and magnesium.

Jyaner:

I went back to look and buy some more yesterday as I see a difference when I take the calcium/magnesium/D3 supplements in liquid form. Two tablespoons have the daily recommended allowance for people my age (mid fifties). The brand I use is Bluebonnet, but I noticed there were two other bottles with different brand names right next to it. Therefore, more than one company or lab makes this liquid formula.

I suspect that it is the magnesium and calcium in liquid form that act as an antiacid. I noticed that I did not have any heartburn whatsoever or only minimally during the three weeks I was using the liquid formula morning and night. I think the regular price for the bottle is like $12.99, but it was on sale yesterday for $9.99 and I purchased two. I bought mine at Whole FooRAB, but you can probably purchase it anywhere, even on line. The recommended daily dose is two tablespoons a day. Two tablespoons have 1200 mg calcium, 500 mg magnesium and 800 mg vitamin D3. The liquid makes it more easily absorbable by the stomach and, I think, has the added benefit of working as an antiacid.

I figure I have to take calcium, magnesium and vitamin D3 anyway. If the liquid form works well and also helps with heartburn, why not do it.

Hope I am not breaking any forum rules by posting this information.

Thanks so much for checking on that for me. I am taking so many supplements/pills I wanted to switch off on some things. For example I am switching my Probiotic pill to a liquid form, and I now take a sublinqual Vitamin B12. Will be switching Vitamin C to chewables.
The Cal Mag I am taking now is Chelated, and it really helps me sleep! So I like that a lot, but I do like the sound of the antacid benefits of liquid form.
I wanted to share with you with what is really helping my reflux, just began chewing on chrystalized Ginger after meals and I have to say it works wonders. It was recommended by my acupuncturist. Bought it at Whole FooRAB. Last night I was having a particularly bad day with Acid because of a stressful day, I had a very raspy voice and I chewed on the Ginger after dinner and within minutes I not only felt better but my voice was back! Even my husband noticed now I am going to chew on it more regularly and see if that is my new weapon.
Thanks again for sharing all of this great info!

I have some crystalized ginger in the pantry also from Whole FooRAB. Will definitely try that again after dinner. I have been chewing sugarless gum like crazy anytime I eat, but the ginger can be helpful too. I have all these remedies. Try some, drop them or forget about them until someone posts about them again.

Look into the liquid calcium, magnesium, D3 corabo. It seems to help me a lot.

I ran out of it and started taking my regular citracal pills with magnesium and D3 in pill form and I could tell a difference in terms of experiencing a bit more burning.

I'll be interested to hear what you think if you try it.
