I'm a little confused here. Let's say I found an article who's AUTHOR is "John" but the article says this: "According to Mark, who gathered the data, police questioned Latinos about their immigration status, which doing so is prohibited"

Now to put that in my research paper, do I say "According to Mark police....." or do I say "According to John police......."

John is the author of the article, but Mark did the research! Thanks for the help guys!

There are many ways to do it.
1. You can write it between quotation marks and write the reference number

"According to Mark, who gathered the data, police questioned Latinos about their immigration status, which doing so is prohibited" []
