Circulatory system in a fish?

well, i'm doing my homework and i'm a little bit stuck, so far i understand that fish have a single circulation, so the blood is pumped from the heart into the gills then to the body, in my text book under the image of the system there is a comment saying that single is adequate for fish because of their low metabolic rate, now after reading this a question in my text book asked me to suggest two ways in which a fish (or better it's single circulatory system) could cope with a higher metabolic rate, i've been straining my brain trying to figure it out... can someone help me? if possible could you also tell me your source..i really do appreciate your help.
by the way don't know if it helps but i'm doing a-levels.
Thanks Again
