Cinemas & Aspect Ratios

I was reading up about The Incredible Hulk on IMDb before going to the cinema yesterday to see it, and remember reading that the film was made in 2.35:1. Although, when watching the film it seemed that the screen was just showing a 1.85:1 picture. The sctual screen looked too small and narrow for a 2.35:1 presentation, most noticeably during the news channel scenes where all of their logos and graphics were chopped off all around the edges of the screen and only small parts were visible/legible.

Now, I would have thought all cinemas were equipped to show films in either 2.35:1 or 1.85:1 depending on the source, but this one looked like the screen wasn't big enough to show a 2.35:1 as the edges went right to the wall... so it seemed to just chop the film into 1.85:1 and show it that way. Can/do cinema's do this, or was the film indeed made in 1.85:1 and IMDb is wrong?

In the cinema that i go to (Cineworld Sheffield), you can always tell if the film is made in 1:85:1 because there are two clack bars down the side of the screen that are not in use, whereas 2:35:1 films fill the screen, and The Incredible Hulk definitely filled the screen, i did however still notice that the DOG's on the news channels were cut off, but i think it was just the way that it was filmed.
