Cinema in HD?

I dont know if this is a stupid question to ask, but does anyone know if cinema's are using the HD Format?, if not i think they should.

Its a totally different technology used in film (the traditional kind)

CRT (tube-based) TVs are made up of lines, with phospors illuminated by an electron gun. Plasma and LCD consist of individual pixels to make up the image. This is what makes the TV's resolution. you get 480 lines on NTSC standard (525 with PAL) and the signal is either interlaced (old-style) or non-interlaced (modern) Interlacing means every other line is drawn per frame (ie. lines 1,3,5,7,9 in one frame, then 2,4,6,8,10 in the next) All these elements affect the sharpnss and detail of the picture.

Film is effectively a continuous spool of analogue photographs (in simple terms) and therefore doesn't actually have a resolution. It all comes down to the quality of the lens on the camera and the size of the film stock used (15mm, 35mm, etc)

However, digital film cameras are hitting the big time now and these do have resolution based on pixels (like any other digital display device) Rest assured, however, these will produce much higher resolutions than your average HDTV will.

thanks for the info, and everyone else thank you :) .

I was browsing for HD & Blu-Ray and i dont like the sound of either of them because they both sound expensive.

HD DVD and Blu-ray appear to make my vast DVD library instantly useless, since they won't support old style DVD's. I know I'm a saddo but that alone will put me off the switch - since the Matrix it's taken me ages to build up my collection, the idea of starting from scratch (and again every 5 years when a new format comes out) makes me feel quite faint!

Sky HD is deffo on my shopping list though...

Im pretty sure Blu-Ray and HD DVD will support regular dvRAB. It doesnt make finacial sense for the players to not support it. Nobody will buy one if they have to rebuy their entire DVD collection. The PS3 will play DVRAB in its blu-ray drive.

Oooh I hope so! The last review I read said that HD DVD and Blu-ray come in a cartridge to protect the delicate data on the disks, but maybe someone will build a cartridge adapter of some kind?

Fortunately I'm not broke and its not a complete waste. I know a few sneaky ways around the whole HDMI issue using DACS and the like, but to be honest, I can't see me bothering with HD-DVD or Blu-ray right now. Their whole attitude just irks me. I may go for it in a few years when the format war has ended and the market has either established or collapsed. Right now I just dont see the point. Get a DVD player with an HD scaler instead. Ramps up the current DVD resolution to HD levels. Not quite as sharp as the real deal, but damn near close enough.

i don't know why people say the prices are so high
i bought a HD-ready 32" samsung tv which came with a 3 tier stand and a dvd recorder for only
