chronic cough

I have had a chronic cough which comes and goes. It can last anywhere from 6 to 15 weeks. I have a 1st cousin, sister, and aunts who also experience this cough. The cough is so intense that we can lose our breath, vomit up mucus and/or food, eyes turn red along with fatique due to lack of sleep. The episodes occur at any time of the year or day without warning. We have all been to different (and several) doctors, but no one has yet determined what it is that we have. I have tried inhalers, cough surpressants etc. Also antibiotics. Any ideas?
 
It could certainly be something called cough variant asthma - you don't mention the type of inhalers you used but that's certainly a possibility. The other possibility you might check into is LPR - Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. LPR is a form of acid reflux that often has none of the symptoms of heartburn. Chronic cough and excessive mucus in the throat can both be symptoms of LPR.

You can try treating the LPR by using over-the-counter PrilosecOTC for a couple of weeks - it will take a while for your symptoms to disappear but the cough may start to improve after a few days.
