Christians Believers: Can the desires of our heart become like idols?

1 John 5
21Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Can we as Christian believers want something so badly that we will often put that before God's perfect will and timing? Can a believer in Christ also idolize marriage to the point where it begins to become the one thing that they think about more then they do about their relationship with God?

Can a Christian think more about getting the spiritual gifts then they do about the giver of gifts? How about a childless couple who want a child so badly? You can get the general idea and can use any of these points to back it up by scripture and your understanding of the word.

You can also use other points or issues that you want to bring up that relates to this topic so be my guest the floor is yours. Please do make your points by way of statements with scripture and not just scripture alone as I would like to hear all points being made.

Can we idolize any of those things? The reason why I am asking this question is so many people use the term codependency so much like it's the big buzz word these days. So I have to wonder if even codependency could be even identified in our culture as idol worship in some form when it comes to others.
