Choppy HDMI video from laptop to TV?

hi, i have a sony vaio laptop NW150J and a samsung flat screen I purchased not that long ago. When I watch DVDs on the computer, they seem fine. When I go HDMI cable from laptop to TV, the video seems jumpy and a little choppy. Does anyone have any idea on how to set this straight? Is there some settings i need to adjust? thanks!
