Hi, I'm new to this forum. I was just wondering if I could get some opinions on chiropractors. I have had back problems for years, but never did much about it. After having my son two years ago, they have gotten worse. I started going to a chiropractor two weeks ago (got on a treatment plan of 3x a week for three weeks and then it will level off). I have gone six times and my back pain is worse and now I'm having trouble taking deep breaths. He is reputable and has several degrees in sports injury and spine therapy. I have questioned him about it and he said this happens sometimes with people...that it gets worse before it gets better. I don't know whether to conitnue and hope that it gets better soon or quit and go to an orthopedist and hope they don't recommend surgery. By the way, the X-rays did not show herniated discs, just misalignments (according to him). Any suggestions or experience with chiropractors??

Hello and welcome to the board, naturelover...You will easily find that everyone here is more than willing to answer any questions that you may have. I will tell you the experiences that I have had with these problems. First of all, I believe that you need a MRI because x-rays just don't show the "whole picture." It is best to know everything that is going "wrong" with your back before using these types of treatment...such as physical therapy and chiropractors. Whenever I using physical therapy, after a while the therapist(s) realized that my condition was actually worsening. They informed my internal medicine doctor, and he told me (before he re-located) that I needed to stay away from physical therapy and chiropractors. You are entitled to a second and even third opinion, if you feel it is needed. I hope you find answers, soon...Do you take any medications for your condition? How long have you had this problem? Thanks, in advance.

I have had lower back problems for about the last ten years and upper back and neck problems just since my son was born two yrs. ago. I don't take medication if I can help it - I tend to just deal with the pain or put ice or heat on it. The recent breathing problems are concerning me now. Thanks for the advice. I certainly don't want to make things worse.

A chiro is not an MD. You need to be seen by a regular MD to get a "proper" diagnosis. An xray will not show disc issues. You need an MRI for that. the breathing issue concerns me.

Most of us on here do NOT have high opinions of Chiros, including me. There are a few good ones out there and they do have their purpose, but not on someone that has not been properly diagnosed by a MD first, and more applicable to ones that dont have any serious back issues.

I strongly urge you to stop any treatments with chiro and seek a consult with a bonfide MD to fin d out what is going on with your back and/or spine.

Seeing an orthopaedic surgeon does not mean you are headed toward surgery or that the surgeon would steer you that way. Conservative methoRAB are most always tried several times over before surgery is ever even thought on.

Most spine and back issues require little to no medical intervention and resolve on their own.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I agree 100% with Justoneofus! You family doctor can order the MRI and/or CT scan but I would have a spinal surgeon (additional training in spinal surgeries) review them and do a complete work up on you. Good luck and please don't ignore those breathing symptoms. I wil be lifting you up in prayer.

Hi,
Welcome! I have to say I gree with seeign a MD and stopping the chiro asap. I suggest you find a spine dr. with a fellowship that only treats spine patients. Get the MRI and then see whats needed.

I don't really like chiro's either and I have an uncle who has been one for many years. I hope youfeel well soon.

God Bless

Well I consider myself a chiro victim. It may be just concidence, or just rotten luck, but I left the chiro after a pelvic adjustment, and immediately did not feel the same.

It's a weird sensation of pressure on my inner thighs and genitals so when I sit down, my legs are spread far apart. I hate it so much. Thankfully, it does go away, but when it comes back, I am miserable. I've told the doctor about this, my chiro, and even the neurologist. They act like I'm nuts.

David, it sounRAB like he "cracked" something that shouldn't have been cracked! Has anyone ever done some testing to see if he did some real damage?

Naturelover, I've been to a bunch of chiropractors in the past, even with my serious back problems. All but one did either no good or did harm. The only one that actually helped me used unconventional methoRAB like vibration rather than jerking to adjust my neck. He did do x-rays and seemed like he knew what he was looking at, but when I took my x-rays to other chiros when we moved away, they would look at them and it seemed to me that they were trying hard to look like they knew what they were looking at, but really had no clue. Some of them are trained to see the obvious on an x-ray, but they aren't doctors and aren't trained to see little abnormalities that an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon would see.

They do have their time and place, as long as you're careful which one you go to, but if you have anything going on with your back, you really ought to be cleared first by a real doctor. (I have a lot of training in my field. Can I call myself a doctor, too? That's what the chiros do!)

"Dr." Emily (NOT!)
