I've heard GREAT things about Chiropractic care and I've heard some bad things. I always feel terrible and I heard everything is connected from your spine to your brain and if that's out of whack your nerves can not function properly..

I am hoping maybe chiropractic care can help me but I'm weary..
Are there any adverse side effects to it?

What is leading you to consider chiropractic care? Do you have symptoms? If so what are the symptoms you are experiencing? How severe and how are they impacting your life?

A good chiropractor will do a full set of x-rays and if he finRAB any significant symptoms or x-ray results of concern he/she will recommend you see a Neurosurgeon (NS) and/or Orthopedic Spine Surgeon (OSS).

Personally I would not consider chiropractic care for significant spinal problems until an MRI was performed and evaluated by a NS or OSS. If someone has significant problems in the spine chiropractic care can actually be a bad idea. But if the MRI findings and symptoms are mild then sometimes chiropractic care is an option.

I did see a Chiropractor for my neck but after my symptoms worsened I had an MRI and upon reading the findings the Chiro said he could no longer treat me and I needed to see an NS or OSS.

You are right to be careful. A GOOD chiropractor has his time and place, but chiropractors are not medical doctors, even though they refer to themselves as doctors. Some are excellent and can help with your minor aches and pains, Others are total quacks, and I'm speaking from personal experience. They can do permanent damage to you if they try to adjust a spine with certain conditions. Please, please see a regular doctor first and get an all-clear before seeing a chiropractor.

Just my two cents worth...

I agree there are some really bad chiropractors out there -- as well as some really GREAT ones. I've had ones that increased my pain or put me in pain when I came in with none. BUT....the great chiropractors have gotten me out of pain and have allowed me to have a somewhat normal life. A good chiropractor will do regular x-rays and mri's if you are not getting relief from the adjustments. I have the good fortune of having a chiropractor who actually was ALSO an MD so he is great at reading my x-rays and MRI's! For me, regular doctors just kept trying to dope me up on pain pills. I had no life. For me, the chiropractor gave me back my life so I can get out of bed and go to work and enjoy life.

I had 30+ sessions with 2 different chiropractors. They charged both me and my insurance company lot of money (as well as my limited free time) for what I now consider to be complete quackery. One used a machine called the proadjuster. And she used it on everyone to align the spine. The other used a small metal gadget to "adjust" my SI joint. It was a total waste of time. I have now learned through long-term physical therapy that, when there is a long-standing back injury, the corresponding muscles get pulled in and are affected as well. The chiropractors I went to did zilch to address this issue and therefore never helped my pain problem. They offered me massage therapy as well. This felt good at the time I was having the message but there was no other benefit to my back from it. I know people who swear by chiropractors, but, me? I will never be seeing one again.
