Meanwhile, the Chinese government submitted mapping coordinates for the baselines of the islands to the United Nations, in order to bolster its territorial claim.
"In this way, we can make sure that 12 nautical miles outside the baseline of the territorial waters are considered our peripheral areas under China's sovereignty," explained the Global Times newspaper.
"In accordance with China's laws, we can deny access to any foreign aircrafts, warships and individuals except innocuous foreign civilian vessels in these waters," it added.
The dispute over the uninhabited islands flared in recent months after the rabble-rousing governor of Tokyo declared he wanted to buy them from a Japanese family. The national government completed the purchase for the country this week, it said.
The Japanese Coast Guard identified two of the Chinese vessels as the Haijian 51 and Haijian 66, unarmed ships used for law enforcement in Chinese waters.
The Japanese government convened a crisis meeting at the Prime Minister's Office and at the National Police Agency.
Yoshihiko Noda, the prime minister, told reporters in Tokyo that that government was taking "all possible measures" to ensure security around the islands, which China calls the Diaoyu Islands. In a meeting with his Cabinet, Mr Noda told his ministers to take "sufficient measures" against the Chinese ships.
Cheng Yonghua, the Chinese ambassador to Tokyo, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on Friday morning and received an official protest from the Japanese government.
According to the Japanese Coast Guard, two Chinese vessels entered waters around Taisho Island at around 6:20 am while a further four ships approached Kuba Island around 45 minutes later.
In Beijing, the State Oceanic Administration announced that two fleets had patrolled waters around the islands to demonstrate, "China's jurisdiction over the Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islets and to ensure the country's maritime interests."
