Think of evolution. At some point we domesticated chickens, and during that process, something that wasn't a chicken laid an egg that hatched something that was finally a chicken.
the chicken came first, but the thing that laid it would have been quite indistinguishable from its offspring. in the grand scheme of things, they both appeared at the same time.
