Chevy Transfer case information?

I got a transfercase from a guy who said the transfercase is a NP203. It is from an 78 Chevy 3/4 ton not sure of the model. How can I find out what transfercase I have? Also why wont my truck move if I disengage the front hubs? They have to be engaged in order for it to move. What is the shift positions for a NP203 and how can I find out what I have?
