Chevy S10 Brake Problems?

I have a 1994 Chevy S10 pickup, 4WD, 6 cylinder, standard transmission. On my way home from work last month my brake warning light came on and the pedal feels soft. I parked the truck to wait for suitable weather to look things over and work on it if I can.

I don't know exactly what the problem is, so I just started looking around. There is no sign of leaked fluid beneath the truck, but it has been a while since the weather was good enough for me to actually check things out. I opened up the lid to the reservoir on the master cylinder. Inside there are 2 chambers. The rear chamber (closer to the cab) has plenty of brake fluid, just over the MIN line. The front chamber however, has none. What is the significance of this?

Any ideas what/where the problem is? If so, is this a repair that it is worth my time/effort to learn about and perform myself, or am I better off taking the truck to a mechanic to have it fixed?
ken k - by "hand brake", you're referring to park brake? I never use mine, the release cable is stretched so I can't disengage it. My "hand brake" consists of parking only in level areas and placing a brick against the rear wheel!
