Chevy/GM 305 cu. horsepower limits?

What was the most horsepower or torque anyone has personally seen produced by a pre-eighties 305? I specify pre-eighties because I'm not sure if the mechanical parts of the engine has changed since the 70's, but I know that the simple feedback carb and CCC changed dramatically to the ECM, etc. in the eighties. Can equipping this old engine with a newer ECM config. be anywhere worth its price in potential engine performance increase?
 
Even the 70's version of the 305 was a smog motor.The cam was the biggest problem.You might get 300 horses out if it by building from scratch,but even then they weren't strong motors.Better off with a 350,396.,400.
