I have a 1991 1/2 ton sport pick-up 2 wheel drive that i have completely gone over and replaced every part to make it a safe truck to drive, always go with the saying of preventive maintenance is the way to go. Now after driving it for a few months now i am hearing clunk or clink sound when taking off in first gear in the rear. I have replaced the motor mounts and trans mount, u- joints have been checked and are tight, I jacked the truck up today to check anything that might be causing the noise like something hitting etc. What i did notice is the passenger rear wheel had play in it by grabbing it, Not in or out,,, but side to side and up and down and i do hear a metal knocking sound not real loud but i also am not putting real pressure on it like letting the clutch out. So just wondering if this could be the problem? if anybody could give me a idea of what this is and is it safe to drive? I did see on here, that some play is normal, don't know if they where talking about in and out. I have no rubbing squealing of any kind when driving.

maybe it's your u joint that is making noise my chevy van was doing the same thing and it was my u joints and they broke while driving it which the drive shaft fell off

i had something smilar. Check your exhaust. it happened to me that the clamps were broken.

you got a bad wheel bearing on that one, that will give it the up and down movement your talking about, pull the wheel and check the bearing, chances are its shot,if it is don't drive it to much like this because it causes more wear on the axle ,and you may have to replace it if bearing wont ride on it good,a little in and out play is normal not side to side or up and down, that's definite sign the wheel bearing is bad, good luck.
