Chest pain that wont go away! please help!

I'll try and give you guys as much info as possible on this so please bare with me.

I'm 22 years old, have plenty of excersie, not overweight and dont smoke(but girlfriend does) and have had pain in my chest on the left side for some time now. It's only comes about 5 times a day (often less) and lasts about 20 seconds sometimes more. The pain is sharp and feels kind of like a bubble of air traveling up just below and to the centre of my left nipple. Otherwise im fine for the rest of the day and i'm like normal.

I've been to the doctor and he says it could be COSTOCHONDRITIS and has given me anti inflammatory tablets twice(2week course and month course of tablets) to try and solve the problem.Although it seems to make the problem better it doesn't make it go away.

The problem has been going on for about 2 years now and its realy worrying to be honest. It doesn't feel like he says because the place of the pain changes (often on the other side too) and seems more an internel problem rather than bruise/soar areas, unless it is the whole lung wich is causing a problem.

Any advice or healp would be great! thanks iin advance.

Hi - when i get chest pain, it is usually one of two things: anxiety or indigestion. and I usually get it at night. Do you think it could be any of those? Sometimes asthma, which I also have, can cause chest pain.

Hope that helps a bit.

best, c

I cant say i've had indegestion before as far as i know so im not sure what it feels like. But it doesnt seem to be triggered by anything and it seems to be pretty random when it happens.

I dont suffer from asthma either so im guessing thats out of the question.

i also forgot to mention that i have a tickely cough constantly too, its like i always have to clear my throat but its not a proper cough. When the cough/tickle is worse i get the pain worse and more often.

I have had tickly cough & chest pain for several years & have recently been diagnosed with reflux (GERD) I don't get heartburn as such, but do get the chest pain on occasions. I'm now on Nexium & my symptoms have improved. Perhaps you should get a scope which would tell you if you have a hiatus hernia & reflux disease. The cough/throat clearing is certainly a possible symptom of LPR (reflux disease) Good luck & do let us know how you go! ;)

He might be assuming it's muscular-skeletal because you're so young and exercise heavily, but I hope he also checked out your heart and lungs. If it IS muscular-skeletal inflammation, you should cut back on exercises that could aggravate it, such as rowing, chest press, heavy lifting, etc.

If you didn't get an EKG and a cardio workup, I'd ask for that now. When I was young I had a heart arrhythmia that sometimes felt like a fast heart beat, and sometimes it just felt like pain. It was like a short electrical charge that caused extra heart beats. I was able to pinpoint things that made it worse - alcohol, caffeine, a particular sinus medication, and of course stress (especially when I was late or feeling rushed).

Note - it's hard to pinpoint a problem based on the LOCATION of pain, because our network of nerves can make us feel it somewhere else. It's called referred pain.

how does he check my heart and lungs? He listened to all around my chest and back with a stethoscope. Is that correct or is there something else he sould look for?
