Cherokee Jeep anyone know about them.?

Now my pal has problems with his Cherokee Jeep gearbox, the transfer box is very difficult to get in and out of gear. At the moment it is stuck in part time 4 wheel drive(part time means to be used only part time on mud or snow as it puts both diffs into perminant drive),but the auto box still drives ok. anyone any ideas whats wrong or how to fix,
