Chemistry Research Project?

I have devised an acceptable research question for a Chemistry project, though I am still skeptical about the legitimacy of the data. My plan is to detect water contamination in different public parks in my town through the use of spectrometry. I am hoping that the absorption spectra of the water samples would provide evidence for the presence of complex ions, which would arise due to the contamination of water by metallic ions. From there on, I plan to quantify the concentration of certain complex ions identified.

My question essentially is that would the absorption spectra provide evidence for contamination to the degree that I would be able to quantify the complex ions? Or would the concentration be too minuscule that the complex ions would be unidentifiable by the spectrometer?

Someone who has performed similar research or has valuable knowledge regarding the topic please respond.
