I know that when you have an -ate at the end of a compound it usually means oxygen, but what about -ide??? what does the ide part mean?

Also, I know that:
when you have an acid+base = salt + water
the base is a metal oxide or metal hydroxide and the salt is a metal + a non-metal
BUT:
copper oxide + sulphuric acide = copper sulphate + water
CuO + H2SO4 = CuSO4 + H2O

so, copper sulphate being the salt, why is it CuSO4 with Copper, Sulphur AND oxygen. a salt only has to be a metal and a non-metal, why is there also oxygen added there? do you also need oxygen for a salt? HELP! I DON'T GET IT!
