Okay so my chemistry exam is next week and there is this one question that they always ask and I don't understand how you find the answer.

Example:

Identify the two elements which form an ionic compound with the formula of the type XY(3) where X is the metal. (The 3 in brackets is meant to be small)

a) oxygen
b) calcium
c) aluminium
d) sodium
e) magnesium
f) fluorine

Please explain how you got your answer as I don't understand how to work it out.
Thanks for any help!
