...CO2 and 1.55 mg of H2O.? The characteristic odor of pineapple is due to ethyl butyrate, a compound containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Combustion of 1.67 mg of ethyl butyrate produces 3.79 mg of CO2 and 1.55 mg of H2O. What is the empirical formula of the compound?

Nicotine, a component of tobacco, is composed of C, H, and N. A 8.925 mg sample of nicotine was combusted, producing 24.211 mg of CO2 and 6.941 mg of H2O. What is the empirical formula for nicotine?

If the substance has a molecular mass of 160 5 g/mol, what is its molecular formula?

3.79 mg CO2 x (12.0/44.0) = 1.034 mg C
1.55 mg H2O x (2.0/18.0) = 0.172 mg H
1.67 mg - 1.034 mg - 0.172 mg = 0.464 mg O

1.034 mg C / 12.0 g/mol = 0.086 mmol C
0.172 mg H / 1.01 g/mol = 0.170 mmol H
0.464 mg O / 16.0 g/mol = 0.029 mmol O

0.086 / 0.029 = 3.0 (3)
0.170 / 0.029 = 5.9 (6)
0.029 / 0.029 = 1.0 (1)

C3H6O

Use the same method for nicotine (determining mg N by difference)
