Cheerleading is definitely a sport- - -back me up?

Cheerleading, in my opinion, is only a sport when there are competitions between two different teams with judging.

Actually, I guess it could be a sport if a team's cheerleaders can make a team play better by cheering better. In that case, the cheerleaders are actually a contributing factor of the team, but unfortunately that isn't the case.

Sports are only you compete against someone else. For example running for exercise isn't a sport, but running in a race against someone else is a sport.

Cheerleading is just kind of like leading the cheers of the fans that are watching the sport.

I've been in competitive cheer for 4 years and school for 2. My best friend thinks cheerleading isn't a sport, just because school cheerleading cheers for other sports. Help me bring up some POSITIVE and ATHLETIC aspects of cheer. Thanks!

well, competitive cheer is. my friend travels to different cities to play other teams(just for cheering)
you practice and go against other people, what else do you need to make it a sport?

It's difficult and interesting, but its not a sport. Sorry.

Of course, I have a pretty narrow definition of sport, namely, that you must have culpability for the actions of your opponent. Let me explain.

The Knicks lose to the Celtics 170-160. Talking to Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni after the game, a reporter asks what went wrong. D'Antoni responds "What do you want from me? We scored 160 points. Do you want us to score 171? That NEVER happens." This is faulty because the answer is that they should have played defense.

Now, compare that with golf. Tiger Woods shoots a 45 on a par 74 course, an absurdly good score. Phil Mickelson shoots a 50, by far the second best score ever. Talking to the press after, Phil says "What do you want from me? I shot a 50. Do you want us to shoot a 44? That NEVER happens." And Mickelson is right. He had no chance to win.

There is a big difference between a competition where you compete on the scoreboard (what I call theoretical competition), like in golf, and where you actually have culpability for the actions of your opponent (what I call actual competition), like basketball.

Cheerleading, like figure skating and diving, goes even one step further than just being a theoretical competition. All of these have no objective measure of scoring. It is a question of artistic interpretation and subjective judging of how well you did.

Again, I'm not saying you don't have to be in great shape to do it. You do. I'm not saying its easy. It isn't.

If you want to call it a sport, I suppose you could. But, you SHOULD concede that there is a very big difference between a theoretical competition like cheerleading and an actual competition like football and baseball.

Note that I am only talking about competitive cheerleading. An action that isn't competitive, however difficult, is not a sport.

Hell yeah it is!
OMFG
How COULD IT NOT BE?

Positive (School)-
We support our school
we compete (well my school does)
We are smart/get decent grades
and most of us are nice

Positive (competitive)-
Its a hard core sport
We aren't cheering for anyone else but our selves
We are athletic like none other we have beastly muscles

yeah cheerleading is defeniatley a sport

DUH!!! its a sport no matter what anyone thinks!
most cheerleading squads do just as much if not more exercise than any other sport..my squad works out with our 5 time championship football team so that shows how much dedication we put into it!
we compete just like any other sport and can get scholarships for cheerleading. statistics show that cheerleading IS the most dangerous "sport"..if bowling is considered a sport then so is cheering=]

I've never seen, met, nor watched, in major competition, a cheerleader who was not in top physical condition. If you are a competitive cheerleader who keeps in shape by exercising, stretching, cardio, resistance training, on a regular basis - you are definitely someone who participates in a very vigorous sport - a sport you can be proud of!

Cheerleading is a sport most cheerleaders have lots of muscles
and etc. the do exercising, people like to watch it,and etc!

if dancing is recognised as a sport now then cheerleading defintely is. its more athletic than golf and we all know golf is a sport!
