mechanic or go somewhere else? I'm really scared to take my car to a different mechanic because i've always gone to this one guy who has all my files and knows my car. I don't really feel like driving an hour to get home but i prob have to!! there are a lot of mechanics around here but i don't know them and what if they tell me things that aren't true about what my car needs!!

Maybe you can help identify.

Recently i had my brakes done and he looked at everything else and said it all looks good. I asked him about this rattle noise that the car makes and he herd it and said it could be an exhaust pipe rattle.
Well, lately i've noticed my car uses a higher rpm than it used to in cruise on the highway, and my check engine light turned on. Whats wrong with my stupid car!
ps its a honda civic lx
150,000 miles 1996 lx

You didn't say anything about what year or how many miles, this is also helpful to know.

"Check Engine" light, aka Idiot Light, in itself could be a number of things, but as a first reaction I'd say check all of your fluid levels for Engine Oil, Coolant, Trans fluid, Power steering, Brake fluid, and also check your driveway for puddles which might be a hint you are leaking something.

If you have a 1996 or later you may have OBD II compliant engine computer and for about $50 you can find a code scanner that will read the code from the computer and tell you more specifically what is wrong.... maybe you can't fix it yourself or maybe you can, but whatever it is it helps you to negotiate with a mechanic, when you talk to them you already know what diagnosis they would find from the computer.

And I must also say, sometimes even silly OBD II computers lie... the computer reading is only as accurate as the sensor reading, so when it says something is bad, either what it says is wrong, or the sensor that detects this problem is malfunctioning, and OBD II has little flimsy plastic sensors throughout your car to help decide when to light that "Check Engine" dummy light.

Another solution to that depending on your area is to take it to an Auto Zone they can read the codes stored in the OBDII and a print out of the codes. From there you may get a general idea of where the problem is comming from. This service is free.
