Check Engine light (service engine soon) came on in my car! help?

Ok, I was 50miles away from my house and the stupid C.E.L. turned on in my car. I have a 98 mercury sable with about 102k miles. A friend said it could be a sensor or a valve. Before the light came on, I noticed my rpms would go up and down on their own while I was at a red light or parked. What could be wrong with my car and how much would I be looking to spend to fix it?
 
Service engine soon, means that the computer is telling you to come into the shop for maintance such as a oil and filter change, also check your fluid levels. The Dealer can reset the cars computer and also find other faults if that isn't the case.......Or it could be a carboned up EGR Valve. Check the maintance part first and have them reset the computer for 3.800 miles for your next warning, for oil change
