My mom's Ford Ranger has over 150,000 miles on it and the check engine light just come on today. (I drove it last night to class and back home- 32 miles total and it was fine-no light)

I checked all fuilds, including the ATF (in the back) the oil, the radiator overflow, the power steering and DOT 3. All fuild levels are fine.

I don't have any machines here to test to see what is wrong with it. We get an old change on it every 6 weeks/3K miles. I'm leary of having it sit with the engine off for a few hours. Will it start again after class? (In class for 4 hours).

Could that light be coming on due to a spark plug being loose?
(That happened once in my 1992 Nissan Sentra). Perhaps, could it just need a tune-up?

yes it can be a lot of things but check the plug wires/plugs and make sure their secure then take it in to get the o2 sensor checked usually they get dirty and stop working about 120,000 miles.
if that doesn't fix it it could be a wide variety of things from wires loose to tranny problems

o2 sensor should be it though

oh yeah you can go to carquest/kragen and have them do it for free they have the computer to check the coding
