Check Engine light intermittent on '95 Ford?

I don't know if my 95 Ford Probe is worth repairing, so I don't want to spend alot of money just diagnosing the problem.

The free places (like Auto Zone) that will look at your car computer to get the Check Engine codes only do that on cars going back to '96. The plug doesn't fit my car since it's a '95.

So, -I know- with very limited info-- what are the possibilities that would make an old car have a Check Engine light come on ->only after driving it 2-5 miles<-

If I turn the car off, the light will be off until I drive a 1-3 miles if the car is hot, if it is cold it takes 2-5 miles before the light will come on. It stays on continously after that (not blinking).

Also, I need an gasket since the engine is leaking oil around the top oil gasket. I might also need a tune up (which is $330 on this car cause it is difficult to access the back spark plugs)

Also, I drove the car recently with very little oil. I don't know how long I drove it that way because the oil gasket started leaking more oil than usual, so I wasn't adding on a bimonthly basis like I was before.

with all those problems, what are your guesstimates on what would cause the light to come on--but *only* after 1 or 2 miles?
I can't figure out why the light does not come on immediately when I turn on the engine.

What are the possible causes?
