We have taken it to our mechanic 8 times in the last month, they test it, it goes off, they find lil things like the gas cap so they changed it, and they also changed another part. Still, we get it back no engine light, after a day sometimes two, the engine light comes back on...so what is the issue? Anyone have any idea? Tips....ANYTHING! The van was supposed to be inspected a month ago, and we can't get it inspected until the damn engine light stays off for the 40 mile mark. Plz help!!!! It's driving my family insane, and we have things to do...LIKE WORK! lol. Plz help!

If they are checking the gas cap it must have been a leak in the emission system. A bad vent valve which can be intermittent, or a cracked carbon canister would be my guess with out seeing the car. You might think about taking it to the dealer where they know what commonly goes bad. Your mechanic does not have a clue...8 times!!!
The code needs several drive cycles to set the light. The mechanic should be driving the car with the scanner attached and running readiness tests to verify the repair. Intermittent problems are hard to catch, but after a couple of failed attempts the mechanic should have told you it was intermittent and replaced the mentioned parts as an educated guess.

It's really pretty obvious, so I'm not sure why you had to ask this.

The check engine light pops up when a signal is sent to the ecu, telling it something is wrong.

Which means, after all the fixing, etc, you DID NOT fix the problem. Something is still wrong.

Take it back in again.

The answer above is right, I agree fully..

except the take it back part... I'd take it to a different garage. Also may I remind you that Advanced auto parts and AutoZone will read the code for you for free and you will know what code is being sent to the ECU.
