Charging TX battery overseas

Hi,

Can anyone advise if the TX battery can be charged in any country that uses the same voltage as the US. I will be travelling to the Caribbean- Jamaica- and wondered if I slip in the US connection if it will charge okay without damaging my TX. I think Jamaica uses the same voltage as the USA. I bought and currently use my TX in the UK.

Thanks for your help.

As long as you are using the TX's charger with the appropriate adapter plug for the outlet's in your travel to country - yes you won't do any damage to the battery.

Palm only has one basic battery voltage - that's 5.0 Volts for all of it's devices that are rechargeable worldwide. The charger will only allow output of 5 volts provided it is connected using the correct adapters.

The powerline voltage in the country you are using it in MUST be 120 volts, or less. It is not designed for 240 volts. The Palm adapter should say 120 v input right on it. You do not need to be concerned with the amperage, just the voltage. Also, 50 Hz or 60 Hz will work equally well.

> "Thanks, but my charger adapter says 100-240 volts so it seems like it covers even high voltages. Right?"

Yes you are correct. Mine says 120 volts. I should not have assumed that they are all the same.

The European versions get the Universal Charger and the adapters as part of the package since they have so many different type plugs and voltages.

The adapters are the key but also the charger itself just senses the input voltage and steps it down to the 5 volts DC and around 1amp regardless of input volts.

In that case you have the proper charger and should be OK anywhere you can plug it in - you might need a plug adapter though.

It's hard to believe in this day and age that in the US, Palm ships the TX with a 110v-only charger, whereas elsewhere it includes a 110-240v charger, but it's true. Obviously it thinks that Americans never go abroad.... LOL! Or else that they can then be ripped off for a travel charger.

Another route if you also travel with a laptop is to get a proper USB sync/charge cable, not the sync/trickle-charge excuse-for-a-cable that Palm ships with the device. Then you can leave your Palm charger at home and charge it from the PC's USB.

A USB sync/charge cable is also much cheaper (eg. on eBay - look for the T5 & Treo 650 types, they're the same) than a Palm travel charger.
