charger -> handheld adapter T3

Howdy folks,

I've been looking for a plug that will allow me to plug the charger that came with the cradle directly into the handheld, allowing me to bypass the cradle and sit at my desk and use the T3 while it gets ac power (charger female to universal connector male). All I've found is various hotsynch cable + wallwart kits, or a wallwart with a permanently installed cable. Seems to me an adapter liek I am describing would be popular and cheap - can someone point me to a source?

I'ver also thought about buying a blank connector from ShopBrando and making my own, but this is not economical. It would, however, allow me to make an adapter to use the Palm universal keyboard and charge the the T3 at the same time, If I could find the corresponding female Universal socket and the pinouts for the connectors somewhere. Anybody been there/done that?

charger -> handheld adapter T3

I don't know if this is what you had in mind, but I "built" the following charger for my travel needs.

The items in this picture are:

1 ? The standard Palm travel charger. Input 100 ? 240 VAC 50/60 Hz. This allows me to plug into all the electric services I?ve ever encountered. You may need a ?special? adapter plug for certain areas of the world, but I?ve found the simple two prong connector from the US has worked in Central and South America as well. Output from this device is a regulated 5V DC rated for 1 Amp.

2 ? Is a standard Zip-Linq auto power cord. This has a regulated 5V DC output, rated at 400 mA. (.4 Amp). I?ve modified this to include a 9 volt battery clip (Item number 3) which is connected at the same point the 12 volt auto voltage is connected, therefore including the protection circuit.

With these two parts I now have 100-240 Volt AC in, 12 or 9v DC in, and 5Volt .4 ? 1Amp DC out.

I then cut the cable on the Palm travel charger and used a standard (female) USB connector (No. 4) . (Other types may be used, but this allowed me to use the Zip-Linq care charger with its USB receptacle.)

With the other part of the Palm charger (the PDA connector No. 8), I used a standard (male) USB connector (No. 5). This could now be connected to the wall charger or the auto (cigarette lighter) charger.

Making sure I had the right +/- connections, I added a connection for my Sony Ericsson phone (No. 6) and a connection for my Jabra Bluetooth headset (No. 7).

Both the Jabra and Ericsson charges needed a minimum of 3.5 volts DC, and this setup is more than adequate to provide the needed voltage.

I?ve been using this setup for a few months now, and have had no problems with any of my ?traveling? devices.

A caveat, not being an electrical engineer, I cannot and will not guarantee or warrantee that anyone else using this setup will have no problems. You may use this design AT YOUR OWN RISK!

My own desire would be to have equipment manufacturers standardize on connections so that we all wouldn?t have to carry around chargers that are sometimes twice the size and weight of the equipment they power.

A final note, all of the above fits nicely in a cloth pouch that I throw in my briefcase before heading out on a trip.

Nice setup! I would like to make something similar. What I have already is the following:

- The Palm charger (the one that comes with the T3 in Europe _is_ the travel charger, it has all the connectors etc. and is multi-voltage).
- A sync'n-charge cable from boxwave.

What I'm missing is just a piece with a female charger connector in one end and a female USB connector in the other end. I should be able to get hold of those connectors, but assuming I do, where in the USB connector should I connect the 5-volt? Maybe someone knows a link describing USB connections, I haven't found any.

As far as I remember - the two "OUTSIDE" connectors on the USB are for power. I used a multi-meter to test the connections from a USB connector to verify, then when I opened up the cable (cut to attach other cables), I verified that I had the right combination of wires. Most times it's one of the following:

Black / White - with black being negative and white being positive.

Black / Red - again black is negative

Green / Red - where Green is the negative.

You can view this image (it's an X-box connector - but follows the standards) for wiring information.

Or here for another diagram:

(Just a hint on finding such diagrams / pictures - I used Google - phrase was - usb wiring diagram - and then I selected "images" for the Google search)

OK fnagle, that's a great setup. I've done similar things with various ham radio accessories.

Your Palm charger apparently had a different end on it than mine -mine has a simple coaxial power connector( 3.5 mm, I think), which plugs into the back of the Palm Hotsync cradle. I would like to make an adapter like the one I described, if one isn't available commercially.

In order to do this, I need (1) a source for the male end of the Palm Universal connector (like the one on the hotsync cradle or the one you chopped off your charger cable) - shopBrando has these (http://shop.brando.com.hk/pdaconnector.php) , but I'm not familiar with which one is compatible with the T3 - and (2) the pinout for the palm universal connector, at least for the power connections. Can anyone point me to a source for these?

I think the female coaxial connector can probably be had in any electronics parts store, e.g. RadioShlock in theStates.

Truth is, it's probably cheaper to just buy a ready-made charger (for example ), but it annoys me to invest in another wallwart when I have perfectly good one

Thanks Fnagle, the feedback is appreciated. I'll go look for the few small items I'm missing and I should soon be fully covered :-)
