In general, what are the characteristics of scary writing. Stephen King, for example, is known to write very terrifying stories. Besides a strong story, how do horror writers shape their work? Heavy on the dialogue? Heavy on the description? Or to each their own?

Sparkling vampires.

That writing was certainly horrific.

All right, so to add a serious answer here, check out this site: http://horror.fictionfactor.com/

Horror writers use less purple prose, less passive voice. They use active voice, which makes the story flow much better.

They describe sounds a lot.

They go into the MC's thoughts a lot.
