Changing from a PC to a Mac? Is it worth it?

So, I'm seriously thinking of taking out $1,000 more on my student loan for next semester so I can switch to a Macbook. I've heard Mac's are better for college students than regular PC's and they are better with defending viruses. I need a computer that can handle me researching and writing. Plus, I write songs and stuff in my spare time, and I know Mac's have the Garageband program. I'd really like to be able to compose music seeing I'm serious about it. I have a regular Acer laptop from Walmart that my parents bought me to get me online for my first semester of college after our other laptop I was using gave out. But it's been a year now and I'm going to turn around and sell my current laptop if I do get the Mac, and put it in a account so I can pay back what I take out. Do you think this is a wise decision? Is a Mac even worth switching to? Thanks!

I'd personally stick with a PC and put Linux on it.

Mac is Unix based, but due to how mainstream it is, there still are viruses for it. However, it is very stable.

With Linux, you get the stability of Mac, if not more, but due to it's 'openness' there are not as many viruses or vulnerabilities. When those do pop up, they're usually shored up rather quickly by the Linux community.

Sticking with 'PC' hardware/laptops is much cheaper. Throwing Linux on it is just that much more secure. Oh... Linux is free too. Don't have to pay for anything.
