Ceramic Transmission Box? Bad buy?

Looking to buy a 2004 Acura TL, manual transmission. Been driving stick for years--very set on a manual car. The car is in good shape, only 40,000 miles, clean carfax... Except. The guy said when he was learning to drive stick he 'messed' up the gear box and had it replaced at the dealership with a ceramic gear box. This sends off red flags to me... But I'm no mechanic. I have driven stick for years and never screwed up a gear box, even when I was just learning. What does it take to do this? Is this a huge deal? What other parts and components could have been affected, what should I check out? Thanks for the help!
The guy is intelligent, the car is in great shape--doesn't strike me as someone who would destroy a car--going to get more details on the gear box story tomorrow.
