Celexa vs Lexapro

My psych put me on Lexapro 2 weeks ago, and honestly its been working pretty good :)

However, he gave me a free 2 week sample...then he wrote me a prescription. Well, I find out my insurance wont pay for Lexapro, but they will pay for celexa.

How different is celexa from lexapro? What can I expect from the Celexa?
 
Celexa has a generic brand, Lexapro doesn't. That's probably why your insurance won't cover lexapro, because there's no generic version of it. The two drugs are similar antidepressents (both SSRI's), but are still 2 different drugs. Also, as of now, only Lexapro is approved to treat anxiety. Celexa does help with anxiety too, it's just not "approved" for it yet.
 
I have been on the generic celexa for 5 months and it has been good for me and my anxiety a few side effeects but way better then the alternative of living with anxiety everyday..not sure what killpanic means when she/he said "approved"...
 
Basically, both Lexapro and Celexa are approved for the treatment of depression. However, only Lexapro is approved to treat anxiety. This does not mean that Celexa will not work for anxiety, it just means that Celexa has not been adequately studied for anxiety treatment. So I think it's just a matter of research. But as I understand it, all antidepressants help with anxiety, whether they are approved or not. I wouldn't put too much weight on it.
