CDM-8940 issues

My first post on here, wish it was under better circumstances. I picked this phone up a few days ago, and bought the connector wire so I could transfer mp3s onto the miniSD card. I am still waiting for the miniSD card to show up so in the mean time, I installed PC Sync and BitPim. I have not been able to transfer anything on or off the phone using either program, but somehow deleted all 80+ names and numbers off my phone.

My question is, how did this happen and what do I have to do to get my text messages off the phone and put mp3s/pics/ringtones on.

EDIT: DAMNIT, I lost my pics as well, had a couple I really wanted 2 keep. I cant read the phone via the programs, how did everything get deleted?
 
Yikes.

Well, I have no experience with the 8940, so I don't want to offer advice that doesn't apply, but an alternative to BitPim would be QPST. You may have an easier time with that, but I don't know.
