CD piracy laws and copyrights??am i illegal?

What does the law say on me buying a CD and lending it to my friend to put on her ipod?
If that is illegal do myself and my partner have to buy 2 copies of a CD as there will be 2 people using the CD?
Can I make a copy of my CD and keep the real CD safe at home?
