After inserting my XP Pro SP2 CD in my DVD burner the drive sounds like it can't read the drive but eventually does. I don't have this problem with other discs. I suspect the CD is messed up but a scan of the CD shows the surface scan to be good and the burner is an GH22LS30 drive from LG.
When I run sfc.exe and insert the CD sfc says the CD is the wrong CD. I've used sfc before and not had this problem. This problem started just as the DVD burner started making the stuttering noises on inserting it. The drive doesn't make these noises after reading the CD the first time, only on insertion and it's just this XP CD.
Also I have upgraded to SP3 and have copied the XP CD to my hard drive and integrated it with the SP3 download and burned it to a CD and the drive still makes the strange noises and I still get the same "wrong CD" message from sfc.
The DVD burner is brand new but that doesn't mean it's not defective. The CD had some scratches on and I used DVD Dr. to remove them.
If it's the CD and I know what's bad on it I may be able to fix it (a file or whatever) from the internet and reburn it. If it's the burner I can just RMA it.
Again it's only on insert that the burner makes the noises and only this CD. I don't know for sure whether the CD or DVD burner is is bad or both.
Is there some kind of disc/drive insertion test I can perform to tell me which is bad?
