Cause of Hiking blisters?

I have a well-used pair of hiking boots with maybe 700 miles on them and never got blisters wearing them on day hikes and treks. They have a gortex lining for waterproofing. Still in very good condition other than a few hairline cracks in the leather where the toes bend. Went on a 30 mile day hike and had terrible blisters. Same shoes, same socks, same liners I have always used and I've taken longer day hikes in these boots without getting blisters. This time got bad blisters. Here's my theory: early in the day went thru high wet grass and was surprised to feel a bit of moisture in the boot...I guess it must have seeped in via the cracks. Does it make sense that this would be the cause of the blistering?

If so, is anyone aware if these sort of cracks in nubuck leather can be repaired or is it new boot time?

Thanks
